The Birman is said to have originated in Western Burma and Thailand. They travelled to the western world via two English men, Major Gordon-Russell and August Pavie, who received a pair of Birmans in 1919 as a thank you gift from the local people.

The first Birman pair arrived in the United States in 1959, and became officially recognized in America in 1967. Since then, the Birman has blossomed in the U.S and had become the third most popular long hair from the CFA’s registration totals.
