There are several wild stories about how this breed came about but it is likely this breed was bred over many years to establish its desirable traits such as large size, docility and the ability to go limp in a persons arms (hence the ‘Ragdoll’ name).

The Ragdoll became a recognized breed in 1965 and are accepted today in all associations for registration.

The cat pictured above has green eyes. All Ragdoll cats have blue eyes. The description of the coat states they are short haired - in fact they are semi-long to medium. Their potential weight is much higher than that stated above. My non-neutered males weigh an average of 15lbs, and my adult neutered male is 18lbs, and they can grow bigger. I currently have a neutered kitten of 4.5 months who is already almost 7lbs! The weight above is more accurate for females, which are comparitively smaller.

We rescued a 1year old, she has been the most unique cat i have ever seen. Great with my 4 year old daughter and full of love. People often are amazed at her ability to go completly limp on the floor and look like a “cat skin rug”. We are very pleased with her.

I have a male ragdoll that is just shy of one year old and weighs 20 lbs! I cannot believe he still has roughly 2 1/2 years to mature and reach his adult weight!

A few errors in the description about Ragdolls that have not been mentioned in the comments:

    1. Ragdoll fur can and does mat just like any other medium to long-haired cat. Brushing my Ragdoll kitty once a week keeps her mat free 99% of the time.

    2. They do require some grooming. Brush that Ragdoll ar least once a week.
