Body Type: Short and sturdy, on low legs.

Coat Type: Shorthair

Ragdolls originated from California USA in the 1960s by cat breeder Ann Baker. There are several wild stories about how this breed came about but it is likely this breed was bred over many years to establish its desirable traits such as large size, docility and the ability to go limp in a persons arms (hence the ‘Ragdoll’ name).

The Ragdoll became a recognized breed in 1965 and are accepted today in all associations for registration.

The cat pictured above has green eyes. All Ragdoll cats have blue eyes. The description of the coat states they are short haired - in fact they are semi-long to medium. Their potential weight is much higher than that stated above. My non-neutered males weigh an average of 15lbs, and my adult neutered male is 18lbs, and they can grow bigger. I currently have a neutered kitten of 4.5 months who is already almost 7lbs! The weight above is more accurate for females, which are comparitively smaller.

We rescued a 1year old, she has been the most unique cat i have ever seen. Great with my 4 year old daughter and full of love. People often are amazed at her ability to go completly limp on the floor and look like a “cat skin rug”. We are very pleased with her.

A few errors in the description about Ragdolls that have not been mentioned in the comments:

    1. Ragdoll fur can and does mat just like any other medium to long-haired cat. Brushing my Ragdoll kitty once a week keeps her mat free 99% of the time.

    2. They do require some grooming. Brush that Ragdoll ar least once a week.

I always hated cats until I saw my father in laws ragdoll cat!! It was love at first sight and I just had to have one. My husband bought one for me and I love him to death. He follows us everywhere!! and is very social with us and great with the grandchildren. I named him Andy, can you guess why? The only thing I can’t understand is why he is all white with pink ears and gold eyes. Some articles I read say they all have blue eyes.

I love my ragdoll Bonnie Blue so much! She is the sweetest thing, rarely meows or makes much noise. She follows me everywhere and begs like a dog, so I agree with Ruth. Her fur does mat, and it can be very bad if I don’t stay on top of brushing her - so I take her to be groomed a couple times a year. She loves to be outside in my mom’s fenced-in backyard, as a kitten she would hunt yard moles, so she must be unique in that hunting instinct. She never ventures out of the yard, though. She did one time climb a tree and didn’t know how to get down, I looked for her for hours before I heard her tiny meow, that she almost never uses, I had to get the ladder to get her down. I like cats, but don’t think I will ever own a different breed, my mom’s cats are just plain annoying compared to Bonnie!

I just got two ragdoll baby boys, One blue lynx mitted and one seal point mitted. They are wonderful! They are so laid back and love to play, and are by far the BEST cat breed, in my oppinion. About the non-fighting instinct..My kittens love to play and don’t let my min pin dog take over them. You can find these cats around $400-1000 dollers. I got mine for $500, it was well worth it. Wonderful pets, have fur as soft as rabbits, and I recommend this breed for any cat lover that wants a playfull, affectionate lap cat. :]

Does anybody know if there is a more desirable color than another?

Someone told me that the Seals are more desirable. I have a Blue Point Mitted female and would like her to breed her. I love her color, but if it’s not desirable, I probably won’t.

Can someone enlighten me on this, please?

I’ve had my Raggie girl for 5 years this month. Her name is Ceci (pronounced “Sessi”). She is a seal bi-color. Actually I did not like cats prior to meeting her when she was a kitten…she was a gift from a friend and claimed me as her “Daddy”. A great companion. Follows me everywhere, sleeps with me almost every night. Very good disposition. Everyone comments on how gorgeous she is with her blue eyes and attractive markings. She knows she is the prettiest girl in the world and a little prissy. I love her so much.

I love my Kali. I got her from a breeder in BC. She’s a lil princess. I never have to brush her, she keeps herself groomed and lookin sleek. She’s awsome with my son, never meows and she is such a loving girl. We can hold her on her back and rub her belly and she goes limp. I wasnt much of a cat person until i researched on this breed and found Kali at a near by breeder.

Ragdolls are beautiful and docile BUT, they shed like crazy as most meduim/long haired cats do. They are clingy, They can be VOCAL as well and keep you up at night. So consider those facts
before you decide to fall in LOVE :-)

I love my ragdoll, she is the most amazing cat I have ever had. She follows me everywhere and used to play fetch when she was a kitten! They are very loyal/clingy and a one person cat so they will probably be attatched to one person in the household more than others - in my case, me! When I have a shower she waits on the mat outside and watches me! She is very curious and loves to watch whenever I am doing something. She is about 8kg - huge and very heavy.

The only downside is her hair, she sheds over everything and must be groomed and have hairball food because they will get hairballs.I will never have another breed of cat after owning a ragdoll, they are so loving and beautiful, I can pick her up and hold her or even carry her round on my shoulder like a baby when I do jobs! Best cat ever…

The picture above is false - That cat is not a true ragdoll, it doesnt have blue eyes. True ragdolls only have blue-eyes.

I had a ragdoll-tiger mix. Altho he looked like a mix, his personality was definitely ragdoll… Sweet, docile, affectionate, cuddly, vocal.. I could pet him for hours and he’d never snap or ever get angry. I never knew a cat could be like him. We had such a connection (I swear I could read his soul thro those gorgeous eyes). I had to put him to sleep last Sept at 15 yrs old, and my heart is still broken. He was my best little buddy.

Merlin was the runt of the litter but the only boy left by the time I learned that the breeder had a litter. He is now 15 years old - still tiny, only 7 pounds but is the most loyal, loving cat anyone could ever want. So gentle. He has beautiful hair but it does tend to mat and I bring him to the groomer twice a year for a lion cut which he hates but I love. When groomed, he looks like something out of a Dr. Seuss book which makes him even more precious. The grooming also cuts down on the allergies as well. If you are looking for the perfect cat. A ragdoll is a loving companion. We love him very much.

Michelle, Ragdolls dont always have to have blue eyes.
The points and seals are blue eyes while solid colours are usually golden-amber colour.

I have a chocolate ragdoll and his eyes are that of gold, however, they did start out as a blue-green colour.

The cat pictured above is NOT a Ragdoll. Ragdolls are NOT orange and white. They are grey and white with BLUE eyes. These cats grow very large NOT 6-10 lbs.

  31. May 17, 2010 @ 7:15 pm

    Teri said,

Amber: You are incorrect. TRUE ragdolls have blue eyes. Read up on breader Ann Baker. All her original rag dolls were bred with blue eyes. Your cat is most likely mixed with another bred not conclusive with the ragdoll bred.

Yes it is true, the cat pictured is not a true ragdoll true ragdolls have blue eyes and can come in a flame point but their fur still has the golden beige color of the the traditional point… My Leilani is very stocky in build but she isn’t a big girl in wieght but she is only 7 months and ragdolls don’t reach full size until the age of four nor do they have full coloring until 2… I just passed my breeders licence test and hope to have many of these beautys running around soon. And Ron if ur favorite is the sphynx keep it to urself this is a page for people who live ragdolls and everyone who has a cat thinks theirs is the best. They also do need regular grooming, my lani is almost long haired so she mats a lot around her neck a bi weekly brush solves this

I’ve owned a lot of cats in my day. I must say that the Ragdoll I own now is the best cat I have ever owned! He plays fetch, he’s always by my side, and he’s more affectionate than any other cat I have owned, and he’s very quiet. He’s my big teddy bear!!!

The cat pictured is not a ragdoll. They always have blue eyes, and as another poster stated, they are not short haired cats either. I also agree that you have listed the size perameters are wrong also. Perhaps the cat picture you placed beside the Ragdoll is a Ragamuffin, but it is definately NOT a ragdoll.
