Origins:

The Siamese is believed to be from South-East Asia and is one of the first defined breeds of oriental cat. The Siamese cat came to Britain from their Asian homeland via a British consul-general who brought a pair back for his sister in 1884. Over the next few years a small number of cats were also brought over, and from this formed the base breeding pool for the Siamese. Thousands of generations of selective breeding has made the Siamese one of the most easiest to recognise.

The traditional Siamese has been bred to be elongated with a Y-shaped head and bat-wing like ears. Some other flavors of Siamese can look more sturdier with a round head and a more proportional sizing.

What you regard as a con, most people I know that have Siamesecats,)at least the Appleheads/Old-Style/Classic types which are the kind most people prefer),we/they consider a “pro” and that is the attention seeking nature of this breed. They will carry on a conversation with you if you so much as look at them sometimes, know when one is sad,and are wonderful companions. If you want a quiet breed this one is not for you. They do like heights,(and to climb),so when in doubt,if you do not see your cats when you get home, look up to find your Siamese “kids”!

I’ve known several Siamese who tended to overeat if given the opportunity - that is, eat until they vomited. Can anyone confirm whether this an individual quirk or a lesser known characteristic of the breed? Thanks!

i would just like to comment on my siamese cat, he is called Nero, because he likes to copy everything you do. He was given to me last year when my oriental cat went missing and was found dead, because i had tried everywhere to find him and they found out i immigrated with my other 3 Scottish cats to NZ, this little old lady breeder asked me if i could take him as he was often picked on by others. So i took him and it took me around a month for him to trust me. I suffered depression shortly afterwards and i would say it has been him that i have relied on to give me the laughs that i have needed, he makes me play with him or i get shouted at, he is so funny and loves the craziest things like spinning on the floor he actually loves you to spin him, plays fetch, even plays fetch himself he loves his belly rubs on the iron board, and at night he tells you its time for bed. He has been such a charm and i love him with all my heart for helping me through so much tough times. To you Nero my Hero.

MY sealpoint is just lovely but he has to always sit in front of the computer screen and demand my atension all the time. He sleeps with me under the covers but I find he eats very little. He has the most beautiful blue eyes I have every seen.He follows me everywhere just like a dog but I don’t find him overly playful. He is great with my children and I would recommend one for a family or someone who wants a cat that will love them to death and be just like a dog.

Macchiato is our siamese, he is the best cat ever! Every morning Macchi sits on my chest in bed and purrs while I enjoy a cup of coffee, he sits on the edge of the tub when I bathe, and he waits by the door when we leave. Macchi plays fetch (alone and with others), he gets along with other dogs, and cats, and doesn’t shy away from strangers. Macchi follows my fiance around like a puppy, and is good with my daughters. Macchi goes outside, and always comes home, although sometimes he brings live birds in the house!

Together, my mother and I have had three Siamese cats. My mother had both a seal point and a chocolate point, when she was in her twenties and thirties. She loved both males, but due to the seal point’s slightly aggressive nature, she gave it away to a friend, and kept the chocolate point. I now have my own female chocolate point siamese, and she has the most beautiful temperament. As she grew up around children she is very confident and loves to be around people. At nine years of age she is still as playful as she was when she was a kitten and often seeks attention by rubbing up against someone then dashing off into another room. Minutes later, she will run back out, through the hallway and go into another room, before tearing back out and racing around a bit more.

She is a fantastic cat, and has caused no damage as we trained her properly when she was young. She has had two litters now, and I’d have to say that a purebred female chocolate point siamese is definately the way to go.

She’s very vocal, clean, playful and loves to be around people. The only con with the siamese, at least the three that we have had, is that they love to defend their property and will chase after dogs and other cats. This unfortunately meant that the female that we have now was attacked by a larger dog (doberman in size), because she stayed to fight instead of running away. Both of her hips were broken as the dog grabbed her from behind and shook her. Thankfully, she was taken to the RSPCA and made a full recovery.

She has a slight limp now, but is still the most perfect and docile cat. As I was growing up, she loved to spend time with me and we formed a close bond, this meant that whenever I leave the house she will follow me unless she’s inside and will cry (loud, long ‘meows’) when I leave.
